Following the news that Billy Bodin has been ruled out of this weekends game with Chesterfield following the injury he sustained in the match against Northampton Town in midweek, manager Chris Hargreaves has said this is the perfect chance for Jordan Chapell to step up and make life difficult for Billy when he returns to fitness.

Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the game, Hargreaves said that he was very impressed with Chapell’s performance levels when he came on as Bodin’s replacement in the loss to Northampton, and as he’s now probably a guaranteed starter tomorrow, he’s challenging him to take the chance.

Whether Chapell will move around as much as he did last time out in terms of switching sides of the pitch to avoid the boggy areas on the wings will depend on the playing surface ultimately, but Hargreaves explained.

‘Jordan did really well and it was a case of trying to play him on the side of the pitch that was best. You keep switching wingers to get Jordan on the area that’s good for wingers. I’m really pleased with him and I’ve told him to keep working hard for his place. He’s now got to keep his place.’

In other injury news for Torquay ahead of the game, Hargreaves admitted that training on the astro turf as we have been because of the weather conditions hasn’t been ideal, and he’s been speaking to other managers and they have had the same problems in terms of the hardness of the surface causing issues with players when it came to knee and ankle joints because of the impact, and unfortunately we are no different.

He doesn’t name names, but he does say we do have some niggles here and there ahead of the match, but hopefully they will clear up. It’s not an excuse for him though, because he knows it’s the same at every club, but for a bit of perspective we’re having to deal with hard pitches and ‘a lot of people are in a worse position than a squad of footballers.’

Very well said.
