Torquay rounded off their pre season preparations with a good two nil win over Exeter City.

Two second half goals from Ryan Bowman and Jordan Chapell gave us victory over our nearest rivals and we’ll now certainly head into the coming Conference campaign opener against Gateshead in good confidence.

One thing from the game that stood out was the choice of 21 year old midfielder Luke Young who was wearing the captain’s armband, and speaking to the Torquay Herald Express after the game, Hargreaves said he’d been very pleased with the efforts of the former Plymouth Argyle man and he’ll be sitting down with him next week to discuss making the armband a permanent choice.

‘He’s a good player and we are very lucky to have him. He’s a great lad on and off the pitch so we have gained a real good footballer. He has his feet on the ground and wants to do well in his career and hopefully we will be a platform for him. I want him to play higher and I think we will have a chat about the captaincy in the week.’

Hargreaves goes on to say that he doesn’t want to burden him with responsibility if it will lead to additional pressure because he wants him to be free to play his game on the pitch, but if being called skipper doesn’t affect his form then ‘he may be captain’.

With the obvious question then being asked about his age and tender years of experience, Hargreaves jokes that normally captain’s don’t have to be the best talkers because they lead by example and he feels that’s what Young does – however when he was skipper he had to shout because ‘I wasn’t as good as him!’
