Manager Chris Hargreaves has called on the Torquay side to build on the one nil win over Portsmouth in our last game.

It was a fine performance from Torquay especially in the first half, and we thoroughly deserved our lead and then somewhat defended with our lives as Hargreaves has previously talked about, but going in to the (hopeful) game against Bury tomorrow, the gaffer told the Official Site that he wanted us to now build on that result, but also learn from some interesting things he noticed during the 90 minutes.

‘I’m really proud of the players and it’s a great achievement for them in their careers. Going to a place like Portsmouth, in front of 15,000 people, and winning is really pleasing. We showed two different sides of our game. The fans were magnificent as well and it was so important for us to get that win.’

The key for us now is to take every positive we can from both halves, and then seek to improve on those. For the first half we showed how we can play and we have to match that and grow with it, especially in the aspects of putting our chances away and whilst on top, if the opportunity arises to take that second chance to start learning to build up a margin in the game so it’s not hung on a single goal.

Defensively there are no doubt things that would’ve been worked on in training, and although we didn’t concede against Portsmouth, to make sure that we are even tighter and defensively decisions are made more wisely at points, so we relieve the pressure and not just clear the immediate danger.

It’s all still a learning curve though, but as long as continued improvement is made game by game, hopefully we should have enough about us to continue to pull away from the bottom and then remain clear of it.

We have put ourselves with the Portsmouth victory well back into the mix of the teams above us, and should the Bury game go ahead, then look to get the three points so we not only improve our own tallies, but we also suck them back down into it more as three points would bring us on level terms with them on 32 points and they currently sit in 17th place.
