Torquay United opened with a defeat on the first day of the new Conference season as we went down three one to Gateshead.

If moments in the game had gone our way the scoreline could’ve been different and in knowing that manager Chris Hargreaves can take positives from the game and our performance, but clearly it also highlighted other areas of our play that we will have to improve upon if we hope to try and achieve promotion back to the Football League at the first time of asking.

Speaking to the Official Site following the defeat the manager explained.

‘We played a good side and they’ve been doing this for a couple of years now. The way Gateshead play is the way it should be played and we couldn’t get to grips with it for a while. In saying that, we had a great chance for Ryan Bowman when it was nil nil but then conceded two sloppy goals. As much as Gateshead had good possession, we switched off from a corner and then an individual error cost us the second goal.’

Hargreaves went on to talk about the plusses he could take from the game though and one of those was obviously new signing Louis Briscoe getting off the mark for us with the consolation and nobody knows yet how important that goal may prove to be as the season pans out, but obviously it was also our first competitive fixture so the gaffer would’ve learnt a lot about the team and their character and highlighted things that will be improved upon as the season progresses which in itself can be a plus despite the game ending in defeat.
