Former Premiership player James Harper has now left Plainmoor after failing to agree terms on a deal which would have seen him remain with us presumably until the end of the season.

The 33 year old had been training under the watchful eye of manager Chris Hargreaves over the last few weeks on a trial basis following his release by former club Doncaster Rovers back in January.

Speaking to the Torquay Herald Hargreaves admitted that unfortunately a deal couldn’t be struck with the midfielder and that he has now departed.

‘It was great to have James working with us, he’s a good player and a brilliant lad, but it was just not financially possible to keep him.’

At his last club Harper played 29 games for Doncaster after joining them in August 2012, but formerly in his career after coming through the ranks at Arsenal, he has gone on to play for Cardiff, Reading, Sheffield United, Hull and Wycombe.

With almost 400 league starts to his name, it’s a shame a deal couldn’t be struck for him but no doubt the gaffer will continue looking at his options and hopefully be able to strengthen the team within our budget with enough time for it to count in the battle against relegation.
