Former Reading, Sheffield United and Hull City midfielder James Harper is training with Torquay on a trial basis.

Harper comes to us with plenty of league experience and even Premiership experience following his time with Hull, and in his career the 33 year old has made over 400 starts, with nigh on a further 50 appearances from the bench. In that time he has also scored 31 goals across all competitions.

He comes to us as a free agent having been released by Doncaster Rovers in February.

Whilst it’s a trial there is no guarantee yet that it will come to anything more as the main basis is he’s simply training at the moment.

Manager Chris Hargreaves told the Official Site.

‘It’s been good to have him here and I’m enjoying having him around the football club. He’s got loads of experience and we’ll just see how it goes. If it’s right for him and right for us, we might do something but even if it’s not, it’s great to have him with us on the training ground.’

One player who won’t play a part this weekend however against Accrington Stanley is midfielder Jack Rudge who has now returned to Manchester United after a brief spell on loan with us.

The youngster is waiting on a contact decision from his parent club, and he felt it would be easier to organise that and show he was worth it, by being around the club.
