Alan Knill has said that despite the disappointment of Michael Poke’s continuing injury, he’s been delighted with how Martin Rice has stepped up to the plate.

Speaking to the Official Site the manager said that he was also pleased with the development of Conor Thompson who has begun training with the first team as cover for Rice.

‘Poke is the only injury and it’s an ongoing problem that is taking a little more time than we expected, but Ricey has been excellent. He’s everything you want. He’s sort of been a number two in the past but he’s taken his chance, and performed really well. We’re fortunate he’s taken his chance. I spoke to him at the end of last season and he felt he could become a number one, and we want that competition between the two keepers.’

As for youngster Thompson, he added.

‘We also have Conor as back up. He’s a Northern Ireland international and we think he’s going to be decent, so we’re in no panic to go and get another goalkeeper.’
