Accrington Stanley’s hopes of retaining their league status have been dealt a severe blow after it emerged they had been charged by the FA.

The charges relate to ‘technical issues’ regarding the registration of players after the League Two side were accused of fielding ineligible players in three recent fixtures.

The FA Disciplinary Commission hearing is next month and one possible outcome is that they could be deducted points.

A statement on the club’s website reads: ‘Accrington Stanley Football Club confirm they they are in receipt of documentation from the Football League in which charges have been laid alleging that ineligible players participated in three recent fixtures.

‘The club considers the charges to be technical issues and will submit a detailed defence to the disciplinary commission hearing early next month.

‘Accrington Stanley Football Club is taking expert advice in this matter and can assure supporters that they will take every available option open to them to ensure that league status is maintained.’

As a Torquay United supporter I’ve witnessed some great and sometimes lucky escapes.

Surely this can’t happen again?

Can it?
